How Does a City First Speak to Us?

<The Feel of the Neighborhood> Prologue

English follows Korean.

How Does a City First Speak to Us?

Cities are never understood all at once.
Instead, they speak to us through brief, fleeting scenes.

The pace of walking,
The direction of the light,
The density of sound,
And the distance at which people treat one another.

Without realizing it, we absorb these elements
and find ourselves already entering a certain ’emotional state.’
I call this the city’s first impression.

A first impression arrives before the shape of a building,
It is felt before the weight of history.
And it is engraved in the body long before the map.

Some neighborhoods are inexplicably comfortable,
While others make us tense for no reason.
That feeling is no accident;
It is the result of environment, usage, time,
and human behavior layered one upon another.

While working at Netflix,
I designed the moments when discovery turns into choice.

A single poster,
a few seconds of a trailer,
shaping expectation and tension inside people
before the story even begins.

That experience was a constant reminder
that people enter an ‘emotional state’
long before they grasp the ‘content.’

Cities are the same.
The first few seconds of a gaze,
the first few steps of a walk,
determine how a place will be remembered.

This series is not an attempt to explain Seoul.
It is a record of the first impressions
I absorbed while walking through the neighborhoods of this city.

I do not explain,
I do not organize;
I simply observe.

From the next post,
I will begin to tell the stories
of how each neighborhood first spoke to me.

When I think about the most authentic Korean streetscape, it’s not the sleek landmarks designed by world-renowned architects, nor the hanoks, which, while cherished, are few in number. It’s the villas—the low-rise, multi-family buildings that have shaped Seoul’s residential fabric since the 1970s. Unlike high-rise apartment complexes, which feel closed off from the streets, villas…

Busan is not Seoul by the sea.

Named “cauldron mountain,” Busan is a city of ports, hills, markets, baseball songs, pork soup, shipyards, beaches, and unfinished edges. From Yeongdo to Haeundae, Jagalchi to Centum City, it carries a rougher, warmer, more physical version of Korea.

Seongsu breathes through “dissonance” rather than harmony. In this place where disparate elements coexist in their own rhythms, we find the freedom to let go of the obsession with finding correct answers.
